AHA's Motto "Ke Kukui Nana i Luna"

Kukui Nana i Luna
At the Academy of Hawaiian Arts, the kukui tree is the symbol chosen to represent "cultural enrichment and enlightenment" at the hālau. The Hawaiian phrase, "Ke Kukui Nana i Luna" translates to "the light looked up to."

The kukui or candlenut tree is found throughout Hawai‘i. In the past, it was highly prized, and every part of the tree was used. Before the introduction of electricity, the oily nuts were used for lighting. For this reason, the kukui has been adopted by the Academy of Hawaiian Arts as a symbol of cultural enrichment and enlightenment.
