AHAMele Performs in October
AHA's music ensemble makes its debut performance

AHA's music ensemble (top row left): Vicki Wong, Colleen McLelland, Patricia Ravarra, Marylyn Djie, Debbie Uchida, Kainani Hartnett; (bottom row left): Lynn Dix, Bob Delacruz, and Kamali'i Bingham.

AHA's music ensemble, recently named AHAmele (concert) was started in April of 2004 with a few AHA dancers who wanted to learn to play Hawaiian music.

As it is in hula some of the faces change, but our determined group meets faithfully every Saturday to work on strums, picking patterns, new chords, and to sing Hawaiian songs (even with harmonies!). The ensemble picked up new players along the way, and now it even has non-hula dancers who have joined AHA just to play music.

Debbie, Marylyn and Lynn play 'Ulili E on their ukes.
October was a milestone for the group as nine members performed together in public for the first time. Our group entertained at a neighborhood party in Berkeley, which served as a dress rehearsal for another performance at a DVD release party for the Asian theatrical group Eth-noh-tec. Both audiences were very appreciative, and we received great feedback afterwards.
The following week, we added a couple more songs to our set list and did a performance at Mission Dolores in San Francisco for their Hawaiian Fiesta.

The Academy’s music ensemble class is open to anyone who wants to play 'uke, guitar, or to sing Hawaiian songs. We meet from noon-2 pm Saturdays in the AHA’s keiki room. There is no extra cost if you are already an AHA member.
Kainani leads AHAmele on the guitar while Pat joins in on vocals.

Players of all levels are welcome - everybody plays/sings what they can. If you want to start to learn to play, come early so you can get a little extra time before class begins.

- Kainani Hartnett
