Ka Hula Hou - Feb 16, 2008

Halau Hula O Kawika Laua 'O Leinani
Diamond Bar, California

Having both begun their study of hula as young children, Kawika and Leinani Viloria have over 70 years of experience between them. They have both studied with many of hula's luminaries, including Kumu George Na'ope, Kumu George Holokai, Kumu Kawaikapuokalani Hewett, Kumu Chinky Mahoe, and Kumu Charles Ka’upu.

They started Hālau Hula O Kawika Lāua 'O Leinani 15 years ago in Diamond Bar, CA, as an authentic, professional, Polynesian dance troupe to perform songs and dances from Hawai’i, Tahiti, Samoa, New Zealand, Tonga, and to teach them to their students the traditional way. In the past 10 years, the hālau has placed in award-winning categories at the Iā ‘Oe E Ka Lā and E Hula Mau competitions; since 2004, their kāne dancers have regularly taken home awards from both of these competitions; the Kumu plan to enter four of these kāne dancers in Ka Hula Hou.

When they were invited to participate in this upcoming event, their first thoughts were: "free form – what a concept!" They both admit to being "stoked" about being a part of this unconventional competition. Kumu Kawika and Kumu Leinani would like the audience to expect aloha, mana, spirit, and passion from their dancers – and they are looking forward to this unique opportunity to utilize their joint creativity in an atmosphere designed for that aspect of the dance.

Dedicated as they are both are to continuing to spread the spirit and culture of the hula, Kumu Kawika and Kumu Leinani believe that the future of hula depends upon those who have learned passing on that knowledge in its pure form and with a true understanding of the spirituality and the protocols: keeping it pono.
