Ka Hula Hou - Feb 16, 2008

Nā Pua Lehua I Ka Ua Noe
Chino Hills, California

Born in Hawai'i, Kumu Keoni's lineage is based on the Big Island of Hawai'i, where lehua blossoms are abundant and the misty rain is almost a daily event in areas around Hilo. This is the inspiration for the hālau's name, "Nā Pua Lehua I Ka Ua Noe." The halau was established in 2003 and named by Kumu Keoni's brother, Kumu Hula Frank Keli’i Chang, who resides in Dallas, TX.

Between 8 and 10 male, or kane, dancers currently study at the halau, and since 2004, they have placed in the award categories at the Iā 'Oe E Ka Lā, E Hula Mau, and George Na’ope Kāne Hula Festival competitions. Other Hālau Nā Pua Lehua I Ka Ua Noe dancers have also participated in and won awards at the Iā ‘Oe E Ka Lā, E Hula Mau, and Mai Kahiki Mai competitions.

Kumu Keoni's initial reaction to hearing about and then being invited to participate in the upcoming "Ka Hula Hou – Pride On the Line" competition was, "You kidding, right?" In all seriousness, however, he is honored to be invited. He believes it will provide an opportunity to really see how the audience feels about his dancers and his hula. "If we suck, we suck! If we do good, we do good."

Kumu Keoni believes that his strong suit will be his kahiko presentations. An avid fan himself of kahiko since the early 70's-80's, he is hoping to present more kahiko than ‘auana in this competition. Kumu Keoni sees that the future of hula rests in the children who are studying hula today, and he believes that hula will flourish as long as the children are inspired to keep learning.
